A charming destination in Ontario, popular for its pristine beach and ideal for summer getaways from Toronto, also boasts a unique historical attraction — a massive decommissioned military submarine open to the public.
Located along the shores of Lake Erie, Port Burwell offers a 2.5-kilometer sandy beach with warm, shallow waters perfect for swimming. The beach consistently earns Blue Flag certification, recognizing its high environmental and safety standards.
Tucked away from urban centers, the 239-hectare Port Burwell Provincial Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors enjoy hiking, boating, bird-watching, fishing, biking, and camping, with over 230 sites equipped with convenient facilities. A section of the beach is also designated for off-leash dogs.
What truly sets Port Burwell apart is the HMCS Ojibwa, a colossal 90-meter-long, 2,000-ton submarine. Once a vital component of Canada’s naval force, this Oberon-class sub was originally built for the British Navy but served for over three decades with Canada’s maritime defense.
After its military service, including stints with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Solicitor General, the submarine was decommissioned in 1998 and later transformed into a museum exhibit.
Visitors to the Elgin Military Museum and Museum of Naval History can board the HMCS Ojibwa to explore its intricate mechanics and learn about Canada’s Cold War operations.
According to the museum, the Ojibwa was known for its stealth and effectiveness in Cold War exercises, often evading detection by the U.S. Navy. Exhibits recount gripping tales from Canadian submariners and the extreme conditions they endured.
Submarine tours are offered at a base price of $17.50 for kids and $27.50 for adults. For a more immersive experience, a premium three-hour tour includes a meal in the sub’s mess hall, a souvenir, and a certificate.
Due to high demand, the museum advises booking tickets in advance online to secure a spot for the tour.
Despite its size and historical value, many visitors come across the submarine by chance and are surprised it isn’t a more widely promoted attraction.
For history lovers and nature enthusiasts alike, Port Burwell promises a rewarding visit, and there’s even talk of excellent ice cream nearby.
The HMCS Ojibwa can be found at 3 Pitt Street, located just steps from Port Burwell’s public beach, about two hours from downtown Toronto.
