As of June 1, 2025, the Ontario government has officially removed tolls from the provincially owned segment of Highway 407 East, stretching from Brock Road in Pickering to Highway 35/115 in Clarington. This move fulfills a key election promise by Premier Doug Ford and is expected to save daily commuters up to $7,200 annually.
“As of today, we’ve taken tolls off Highway 407 East, saving daily commuters $7,200 each year. That means that there isn’t a single publicly-owned tolled highway anywhere in Ontario — and under our government, there never will be again.” Doug Ford said in a post on his social media, X account.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria emphasized that this change means there are no longer any tolls on publicly owned highways in Ontario. The decision is part of a broader initiative to alleviate financial pressures on drivers and improve transportation efficiency across the province.
Previously, tolls on this section of Highway 407 East varied based on vehicle type and time of day, with peak rates reaching up to 29.66 cents per kilometer for light vehicles. The removal of these tolls is anticipated to encourage more drivers to utilize this route, potentially easing congestion on other major highways like the 401.
This development follows the earlier elimination of tolls on Highways 412 and 418 in April 2022, marking a continued effort by the Ontario government to make highway travel more accessible and affordable for residents.
